The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is establishing its first international net zero standard.
ISO, which is well-known for its rigorous standards in a variety of industries, is slated to introduce this new standard at COP30 in November 2025.
The upcoming standard seeks to speed the transition to a sustainable society by defining clear guidelines for the net zero transition, establishing strong standards, and eventually enabling comprehensive and independently verifiable climate action.
The purpose of this development is to provide a worldwide solution that aids organizations in their pursuit of net zero. In keeping with ISO’s mission to assist the net zero transition, this standard responds to industry demand for reliable, verifiable standards appropriate for organizations of all sizes, across all industries, and across all regions.
ISO works in over 170 countries, partnering with thousands of professionals to develop standards that have an impact on everyday life and business operations around the world.
The ISO Net Zero Guidelines, unveiled at COP27, will serve as the foundation for the new net zero standard. By offering reliable best practices, these guidelines assisted organizations in developing comprehensive net zero programs.
By establishing strong guidelines and procedures that validate the veracity of net zero claims, the upcoming standard will protect against greenwashing and boost public confidence.
A public consultation on the standard is anticipated to begin later in 2025, and national standards bodies from over 170 nations have contributed to its development. Ensuring worldwide input and representation while taking into account the most recent advancements in climate research will result in a comprehensive and efficient standard.
Noelia Garcia Nebra, Head of Sustainability at ISO, declared the official start of the development process during London Climate Action Week.
Collaborating with ICONTEC, Colombia’s National Standards Body, the British Standards Institution (BSI) is organizing the process. This joint venture highlights how crucial international cooperation is to building a sustainable future.
Supporting the net zero transition is something ISO takes very seriously. ISO takes seriously its responsibility to enable a net zero transition, according to Noelia Garcia Nebra, Head of Sustainability at ISO. A global standard that the market has been requesting will be delivered as part of our climate commitment, and it will be crucial that it be appropriate for businesses of all sizes, in all industries, and across all regions.
